Measure a DXF file online

To measure a DXF online, open it in DXF Viewer and press M or click Measure. Click two points for a distance with ΔX, ΔY and the angle, or switch to Chain or Area. Points snap to endpoints, midpoints and circle centers, and every result goes into a list you can export to CSV.

How to measure a DXF

  1. Open the drawing in DXF Viewer.
  2. Check Drawing units. Results, coordinates and the drawing size are shown in these units.
  3. Press M or click Measure, then pick Distance, Chain or Area.
  4. Click the first point and the second point. For a chain or an area, keep clicking and double-click to finish.
  5. Hold Alt to place a point without snapping.
  6. Click Export CSV to save all measurements.

Three measuring modes

modeclicksresult
Distancetwo pointslength, ΔX, ΔY and the angle
Chainseveral points, double-click to endthe total length and the number of segments
Areathe corners of a shape, click the first point or double-click to closethe area and the perimeter of the polygon

Each result is numbered (Distance 1, Chain 2, Area 3) and stays in the list until you clear it, so you can collect a dozen dimensions and send them as one CSV.

Snapping

A click within 12 screen pixels of a real point of the drawing lands exactly on it. The viewer snaps to the endpoints and midpoints of lines and polylines and to the centers of circles and arcs, taken from the DXF entities, so you measure the true geometry and not a point on the curve's rendering. Near 0°, 90° and 180° a distance line also locks to the axis. Hold Alt to switch snapping off for one click.

Units

The units come from the drawing header. If the header has none, the viewer says the units are assumed, and you can pick the right ones: millimeters, centimeters, meters, inches, feet, yards, mils and others. One inch is exactly 25.4 mm, so a dimension that is 25.4 times off points to a units mix-up in the file.

Does a DXF contain dimensions?

A DXF can carry dimension objects, but only if the person who exported it included them. Many DXF files for cutting have the profile alone. The measure tool works in both cases because it reads the geometry itself. To see a single object's data, turn on Properties and click a line, circle or arc.

Frequently asked questions

Can I measure a DXF without CAD software?

Yes. The measure tool runs in the browser viewer and needs nothing installed.

How do I measure the area of a shape?

Choose the Area mode, click each corner of the shape and double-click to close it. The area appears in the results list.

Does measuring work on a phone?

Yes. A short tap places a point, two quick taps finish a chain or an area, and pinching zooms without placing points.

Why do my measurements look 25.4 times too big?

The file's units are wrong or missing. Set the correct Drawing units, or re-export the DXF in the right units.

Does the measurement change the file?

No. The viewer only reads the drawing. Measurements live in the results list and the CSV.
