DXF file not opening: causes and fixes
A DXF usually fails to open for one of five reasons: the file is really a PDF, an image or a saved web page; it is empty; it is a binary DXF that the program cannot read; the drawing sits far from the origin and looks blank; or it is too large for the program's memory. Drop the file into DXF Viewer and it names the cause.

How to find out why a DXF does not open
- Drop the file into DXF Viewer. Before drawing anything, it checks the first bytes of the file.
- If a message appears, it names the real file type and the fix. Follow it.
- If the screen stays empty, click Fit and open the Layers panel to check that layers are visible.
- If the drawing still does not open, use Send file to us in the error window; the file is sent only if you click it.

Binary DXF
Most DXF files are plain text, but CAD programs can also write a compact binary DXF. Some programs and online tools read only text DXF and fail on it. DXF Viewer recognizes the binary header and converts the file to text DXF in the browser before drawing it, for files up to 30 MB. For a larger binary file, re-save it as ASCII DXF in your CAD program.
Opens, but something is missing
- Text looks different. CAD programs use SHX fonts that a browser does not have. The viewer replaces them with similar fonts: the text reads the same, the letter shapes differ.
- Parts of the drawing are absent. Check the Layers panel first. External references (Xref) are not loaded, because they live in other files.
- Only a flat outline appears. The viewer shows 2D geometry. 3D solids in a DXF are not displayed.
When another program refuses the file
If the DXF opens here but not in your design or CAD software, the file is readable and the problem is the version or a feature that program does not support. Some older programs read only older DXF versions, such as R12 or 2000. Re-export the file in an older DXF version from the program that created it, or save a fresh copy as ASCII DXF.

Why does my DXF open as a blank screen?
The objects are probably far from the origin, or every layer is turned off. Click Fit, then open the Layers panel and show all layers.
How do I repair a DXF file?
Open it in the program that created it and export it again, ideally as ASCII DXF. If it was a cutting file, Check DXF can also remove duplicate and zero-length objects and give you a fixed copy.
Can a DXF be a 3D file?
The format can hold 3D objects, but the viewer shows 2D geometry only. Export a 2D view or a flat pattern from your CAD program.
Is my file uploaded when I try to open it?
No. The file is read in your browser. It reaches us only if you choose Send file to us after an error.
What if the file is a DWG renamed to DXF?
The viewer recognizes the DWG header, converts it on your device and opens it anyway.
